GROUNDING

Grounding is very important for the elimination of static charges that are generated on conductors. Human beings are conductors and MAJOR generators of static electricity; it is imperative that we eliminate static charges from building up on any person who will come in contact with ESD sensitive components or assemblies. Preventing static generation on the human body is best accomplished by grounding personnel with a grounding device. Personnel grounding devices directly link and operator to the ground, eliminating any static charge from being generated on the operator's body.

Types of Personnel Grounding Devices:
  • Wrist Straps - The first line of defense; strap and cord must be used together. The most economical method of protection.
Should have:
Stainless Steel Contact Area
Adjustable Band
Quality Snap and Cord


A wrist Strap must be properly grounded to either a utility ground or common point ground.

  • Heel and Toe Straps - Offers better mobility but requires special static dissipative or conductive flooring.
-Should be worn on both feet

- Workstation and Mat
- Soldering irons and electrical tools
- Handling Equipment, Jigs and Fixtures
- Mobile Equipment and Storage Shelves.


Mobile Equipment that must be grounded includes:

Carts or shelves with wheels
- Ground through chains or conductive casters

Chairs
- Conductive casters, glides or chains for grounding

Conveyor Line Carriers
- Should be static dissipative with ground connection or mechanism
